mCube Acquires Xsens from ON Semiconductor
ON Semiconductor continues to make progress towards its goal of unlocking shareholder value through divestiture of non-core businesses
Combination of Xsens and mCube creates a technology leader for innovative 3D motion tracking solutions
SAN JOSE, CA – Nov. 9, 2017 – mCube, provider of the world’s smallest and lowest power MEMS motion sensors, and ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ON) today announced that mCube has completed the acquisition of motion-tracking technology supplier Xsens from ON Semiconductor.
Xsens has now become a wholly owned subsidiary of mCube. It will maintain the Xsens brand and will continue to operate as a stand-alone business unit of mCube from its headquarters in Enschede, The Netherlands. Xsens was a subsidiary of Fairchild at the time of ON Semiconductor’s acquisition of Fairchild Semiconductor in Sept. 2016.
Ben Lee, CEO of mCube, said: “Xsens is focused on being the technology leader in sensor fusion software and 3D motion-tracking applications for use in human body motion and industrial sensor module markets. Miniature, low-power motion sensors such as the products from mCube are an essential component of successful motion-tracking systems. By combining Xsens and mCube under one umbrella we will be able to innovate faster and more effectively, and to develop new motion-sensing solutions that are valuable to both companies’ customers.”
Ferry Willems, general manager of Xsens, said “Joining mCube is an ideal outcome for Xsens, giving Xsens the opportunity to continue to accelerate our growth, and to develop innovative 3D motion tracking solutions with a company focused on inertial MEMS sensors.”
Bernard Gutmann, executive vice president and chief financial officer of ON Semiconductor, said “With the divestiture of Xsens, we continue to make progress towards our stated goal of unlocking shareholder value through the divestiture of businesses that do not completely align with our strategy of expanding our footprint for power, analog and sensor semiconductor solutions for the automotive, industrial and communications end markets. Xsens is an outstanding company with market leading motion-tracking sensor technology and software capabilities, which should further accelerate mCube’s success in its target markets.”
mCube makes the smallest and lowest power MEMS motion sensors in the world. As a technology leader, mCube aspires to be the enabler for the Internet of Moving Things by putting a MEMS motion sensor on anything that moves, improving the way people live and interact with technology. With over 300 million units shipped and having received multiple awards for product innovation, mCube continues to provide the world’s most advanced inertial sensing solutions for smartphones, wearables, and IoT devices.
